Shuffleboard history

Shuffleboard is an ancient game with its history dated back to 15th century. It was initially played on the deck of the ships. It quickly gained popularity in the 19th century when entered into United States.
Robert Ball is credited for introducing this game of the ship decks to the ground by building first shuffleboard court in front of the hotel. Later table shuffleboard was introduced which quickly became popular with the introduction of the game to the bars and clubs. St. Petersburg is known for introducing modern shuffleboard by introducing rules and etiquettes for the first time.

Table shuffleboard is played on a finely furnished table marked with scoring zones while deck shuffleboard is played on smooth concrete surface marked with scoring areas. Both table and deck shuffleboard requires some set of equipment.
Table shuffleboard in addition to the table requires pucks, wax, a scoring system, and brush. Pucks are used to slide down the table to land in scoring areas to score points. Wax also known as powder, are used to make the table surface slippery to make it easy for the pucks to slide. A scoring system is used to keep score, while the brush is used to clean the table before making it ready for the next game.
Deck shuffleboard requires pucks, cues, broom and scoring system in addition to the playing court or surface. Just like table shuffleboard pucks are used to slide down the playing area to land in scoring zone. Cues are required to push pucks down the playing area. Broom is required to clean the playing surface and scoring system to keep score.

How to play shuffleboard

Shuffleboard is a fun game that requires strategy, skill and practice. Practice for the precision and aim for scoring area. Master cue hold and puck sliding by practicing regularly.
Hold the cue at the top with one hand and the other one in the middle for more control and power. Push your weight on the front foot for more power and precision. Maintain follow through after pushing the puck for better reach and movement.
Grip the puck gently and push it smoothly avoid abrupt movements. Align your body and hand position in a straight line to the movement for precision. Focus on the target instead of the puck while sliding puck. Check the speed of the table and pucks condition by practicing before the game. Master the knock off technique and use it wisely to counter opposition moves.

Shuffleboard Rules

Shuffleboard has two main types Deck Shuffleboard and Table Shuffleboard. Both have some common rules but are different with table shuffleboard have more types and have different rules for each game type.
A toss decides who goes first in both types of the game.
Each side takes turn sliding pucks.
Pucks are considered worth scoring only when they wholly lies in the scoring area not touching line.
The side winning round goes first in the next round.
The most common type of table shuffleboard is played to 15 or 21 score a team reaching first there wins. While deck shuffleboard is played to 51 or 75 points.
Deck and table shuffleboard are further divided into game types each have different rules.

Variation and innovation

Shuffleboard has two main types table shuffleboard and deck shuffleboard. Both deck and table shuffleboard can be played indoor and outdoor.
Table shuffleboard is further divided into many types on the basis of the playing rules. Horse collar shuffleboard, knock off shuffleboard, and crazy eight shuffleboard. These are different shuffleboard variation but they only differ on the basis of scoring rules.

Creating your own shuffleboard table or court is a fun activity. If you are a beginner, start with the small size of table. Select wood, plywood and other materials according to your available space, budget and experience level. Small size tables provide more durability but less playing area. The finishing of the surface is crucial for puck movement and smooth display.
Deck shuffleboard courts are made up of concrete. Leveling the surface before applying concrete is the first step to building your own ground shuffleboard. Pressing the surface before applying concrete is very important so that the surface my not sit down with time. Combination of concrete is another crucial thing, ensure quality so that the concrete doesn’t gets cracks or very little cracks.

Shuffleboard doesn’t requires intense physical activity but it doesn’t mean it has no health benefit. Shuffleboard improves hand eye coordination. It also helps decision making process as it requires strategy and planning to win the game. More importantly it applies minimal joint stress on joints that helps people with joint issues to get involved in meaningful activities.
Shuffleboard is a physical game and is played in community centers, clubs and retirement centers. It helps in social interaction between people, helps in making friends and promotes a sense of belongings which is necessary for the mental health and well beings.
